GOLAR BINGE CONTINUES
John Fredriksen-controlled shipowner books another couple of newbuildings at Samsung Heavy with the promise of more to come.
John Fredriksen's Golar LNG has continued its newbuilding feast with an order for two more vessels at Samsung Heavy Industries.
And there is the promise of more deals to come with Oslo-listed Golar also close to sealing a contract for a number of floating storage and regasification units.
Golar says it will pay $400m for the two 160,000-cbm units at Samsung, in a deal which comes only a week after the owner penned four identical ships at the same yard.
The latest ships will be rolled out in 2013 and 2014.
"The board consider the competitive price and payment terms, the early delivery positions and the flexibility with respect to design to create a significant commercial advantage over other operators who will enter the newbuilding market at a later stage."
Golar says a mixture of cash, working capital and fresh bank loans will be used to pay for the latest pair. It tapped some of Golar LNG Partners' IPO purse to pay for the previous four.
Samsung received an order for two LNG carriers earlier this month and has been quiet about who was behind the contract.
Golar says in a statement its latest brace were taken from Fredriksen's World Shipholding at cost, raising the prospect the private company was the mystery owner to ink that deal.
It added: "In addition to the announced new building program, Golar is in final discussions regarding firm commitments for construction of multiple FSRU carriers."
It did not reveal which yard is in line for the contract or suggest how much the vessels will cost.
Last week TradeWinds reported the shipowner was in discussions with Hyundai Heavy for a couple of yard slots.
