Trinidad sees potential for LNG growth

Proven gas reserves in Trinidad and Tobago have fallen by 1 trillion cubic feet in just a year but the Caribbean islands' energy minister has highlighted potential LNG market growth.

Research group Ryder Scott counted 13.4 Tcf in 1P reserves at the end of December, down from 14.4 Tcf at the close of 2009.

Energy Minister Kevin Ramnarine said the group also certified proven and probable (2P) reserves of 21.1 Tcf, a decline from 22.3 Tcf. He said Trinidad needs to create more demand to spur investments in exploration.

Although Ramnarine focused primarily on electricity generation growth, he also questioned whether the Atlantic LNG complex (pictured) should end its development story at train 4, which was completed in 2006. "Given the unfortunate events in Japan there has been a renewed confidence that LNG is the fuel of the future," he said.
