Teekay in market for new buildings and floating storage and regasification units

Teekay is considering contracting both LNG newbuildings and floating storage and regasification units.

Speaking to analysts in a second quarter results briefing company president and chief executive Peter Evensen said that for LNG carriers the preference now is for 160,000-to170,000- cbm Atlanticmax sized vessels with lower boil offs of 0.1%. "I think if we ordered now, we would order a better spec at a lower price than some of the people who havealready ordered," he said.

Evensen said these vessels are for projects that come onstream post 2015-2016, adding, "and that's when I think things will really get exciting in the LNG shipping space, because there'll be a lot of new projects coming on".

The boss said this is also reflected in the FSRU market where Teekay has bid on but not yet won any projects. He said he is heartened though as demand in this sector is changing from conversion jobs to more purpose-built, larger units of 155,000- cbm to 173,000-cbm.

Asked if the company would order an FSRU without firm employment in place for the unit, he said: "We don't consider it speculative. We see a wall of opportunities in late 2015 into 2016."
