Regas vessel dribbles LNG offloading at South Hook

An LNG regasification vessel has undergone repairs after a release of cargo during discharge operations at the UK's South Hook terminal.

Excelerate Energy said a small volume of LNG was released from the 138,000-cbm Excelerate (built 2006) following the failure of a thermowell, which is used to allow the insertion of a sensor into the liquid stream to take temperature readings.

The incident occurred on 1 March. The company said the LNG dropped onto the deck beneath the pipe. The thermowell was quickly repaired but the spill caused a small crack in the deck plate.

"At the time of the incident the cause of the release was identified and quickly isolated and contained," Excelerate said. "The vessel remained safely alongside the jetty and completed the cargo

The company added that it informed the terminal operator, the sub-charterer of the vessel and local
authorities. Milford Haven Port Authority, which overseas operations at South Hook, said an investigation is under way.

Excelerate left South Hook on 3 March, underwent repair work at Navantia's Cadiz yard and returned to service last weekend.

LNG carrier grounds in Suez Canal

A laden LNG carrier owned by BG Group grounded in the Suez Canal this week, writes Lucy Hine.

BG said the 145,000-cbm Methane Rita Andrea (built 2006), which is operated by Ceres Services LNG, ran aground on Tuesday near the 118-kilometre marker. "No crewmembers were injured in the incident and, at all times, the integrity of the vessel and cargo remained secure," BG said.

The vessel was refloated on Wednesday and was inspected by Suez Canal officials who approved it to exit the waterway. BG said: "The Methane Rita Andrea has been deemed seaworthy in all respects and is free to continue her voyage. An investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances leading up to this incident."

Electronic data show the vessel is scheduled to arrive in Taiwan on 8 April.
