Less is more at Navantia

Spanish yard Navantia Ship repairs Fene-Ferrol is seeing fewer LNG carriers this year but is
undertaking bigger projects as owners repair and reactivate older tonnage to trade in the current hot market.

The shipyard has worked on 16 LNG carriers this year against 23 in 2010 and 28 in 2009. Managers said, however, that the jobs being done are now more complex. In particular, they highlighted reactivating Golar LNG's 126,277-cbm Gimi (built 1976) after a period in lay-up, bearing replacement work on the Sonatrach-controlled
125,260-cbm Mostefa Ben Boulaid (built 1976), and repairs to the main gearbox of GDF Suez's 154,472-cbm Gaselys (built 2007).
