MAERSK ASKS OFFICERS NOT TO ABANDON SHIP
Danish shipowner AP Moller Maersk has made an offer to all the officers sailing onboard its soon-tobe offloaded Maersk LNG fleet encouraging them to remain in their jobs. In a letter this month the company invited both junior and senior officers assigned or serving on its LNG ships to participate in a "non-resignation bonus scheme".
They are being offered a bonus equivalent to one sixth of their full annual salary to be paid in three equal instalments starting in November, providing they sign up to the scheme before 1 november.Industry sources said this could amount to a lumpsum of anywhere between $7000 and $30,000.
The company outlined three purposes of the scheme. It said AP Moller-Maersk wanted to reward dedicated effort and allow officers to get to know the new owner of the vessels so they can "make their own qualified and informed decision about their future career, rather than jumping to quick conclusions".
The company added: "The potential buyers have indicated a strong interest to maintain the crews currently working in our LNG fleet."
AP Moller-Maersk has been trying to keep the crews of its eight-ship Maersk LNG fleet informed about the sale after officers expressed their concerns about a lack of information. Last week Teekay and Marubeni emerged as the buyer of the fleet, paying $1.4 billion for the business. A deal is due to be finalised early in the New Year.
